Integrated from metal to magnet
Located on Independence Parkway in Fort Worth, Texas, Independence is MP Materials' fully integrated facility for producing neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets. This state-of-the-art site transforms refined rare earth materials from Mountain Pass into metals, alloys, and finished NdFeB magnets. The facility commenced metal production in 2024.

Our Process
Innovative, sustainable magnet manufacturing
Magnet manufacturing is a complex process with exacting standards. MP Materials uses custom, state-of-the-art equipment and processes that ensure precision, efficiency, and the highest quality at every step while minimizing waste and maximizing environmental performance.
Metal Reduction
We use a molten salt electrolysis process to reduce rare earth oxides into pure rare earth metals.
Alloying
We combine rare earths with other metals to create NdFeB magnet alloys using a process known as strip casting.
Pressing and Sintering
Alloy powder is compacted under high pressure and then heated to create dense magnetic material blocks.
GBD and Finishing
Small amounts of heavy rare earths can be added to enhance coercivity, and magnet blocks are shaped and finished.
Recycling
We are developing a multi-pronged approach to material recycling that leverages the synergistic capabilities of Mountain Pass.
